Finally, Akira’s Live Action

Sometimes an anime, it can become so mainstream that it could be considered a classic. There are lots of classics of anime out there like Kimba the White Lion, Ghost in the Shell, and Spirited Away. What do all these anime have in common? Well, these anime are specifically anime movies and a very deserving movie classic is Akira. I have an interesting connection with Akira by watching it and seeing it twice in games hosted by my anime club. The game was Anime Hot Seat similar to Charades in giving clues to the guesser without saying the words listed in the title. We tried describing it as a movie that has Tetsuo Shima gone from good to bad due to megalomanic or power-hungry intentions. It did not matter if we said it had a red motorcycle or a character with broken powers nobody could guess it. Everyone knew the anime, but the people guessing could not form the movie’s name both times it was played. Anyway, Akira is getting a live-action remake. A classic of this scale is hard to imagine but might actually happen this time. Warner Bros. acquired the rights for a live-action attempt in 2002 and its release was announced May 21, 2021. It took at least five times of changing directors before Taika Waititi was announced. Taika Waititi has experience converting comic books to the big screen as the director of Thor: Ragnarok and director for The Mandalorian Star Wars series. He also wants the manga to serve for the inspiration for the movie than looking to the anime movie as source material. 2019 has been a year where live action has risen in popularity like Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and Disney remakes (Aladdin and Dumbo). Would Akira prove better than other live actions before 2019 and bring justice to the Akira name?
